NOTE: Even when using decarboxylated Cannabis, honey is not the best method for extracting cannabinoids. If you have a bunch of plant material around, you can experiment with this recipe for fun like I did OR you can make Hash Honey. The most effective way to extract cannabinoids from plant material is either by making Cannabis infused oil or Cannabis tincture. But again, if you have a bunch of trim laying around, this is still pretty good stuff and some people swear by it.
Last week (or maybe two weeks ago) I shared this delightful CBD Matcha Latte recipe made with Colorado Hemp Honey and it got me thinking…is it time to make more Cannabis infused honey and finally put this recipe up on my Cannabis recipes blog?
And that question brought up two other questions. Do I have a 2 gallon bucket of my uncle Jerry’s honey? And do I have a jar of mystery trim sitting in my baking cabinet?
Yes.
It is TIME for…
Cannabis Infused Honey
I’ll be the first person to warn you…this Cannabis infusion is downright messy.
It’s honey. It’s fun. It’s worth the mess IMHO.
Despite my best efforts, my hands always get covered in pot honey (because I can’t help but squeeze the cheesecloth out with my own two hands) and I end up leaving sticky fingerprints all over everything.
And I always end up licking my sticky fingers.
That ends up making for highdeas like, “I should put more of this in my tea.” Which leads to other highdeas like, “I should put more of this in my tea.” Which leads to other highdeas like, “I should put this in everyone’s tea.”
This time around, did I stick my sticky fingers into my warm tea because I didn’t want to waste a drop of this stuff? No. I’m not an animal. Maybe. Yes.
I remember reading something by some troll on the interwebs about how marijuana infused honey wouldn’t get you stoned and that it was a waste of time.
I’m here to tell you that that wasn’t true in my experience. It may not be as strong as coconut oil or tinctures, but as long as you use decarboxylated Cannabis, you heat it up for long enough, and stir it every now and again, this Cannabis infused honey can work.
How do I know this? Because I just did it.
Case closed.
I went low (less than 180°F) and slow on this Cannabis honey tincture and since I was shooting a video tutorial, I ended up leaving it in the crockpot for several days. However, I tested it after 12 hours and the perfect microdose for me was about 1/2-1 teaspoon, so you may not have to leave it for as long as I did.
Cannabis Infused Honey in the Magical Butter
You can use this recipe for the magical butter to make infused honey as well. I made my first batch in the magical butter and it came out great. The only downside was that I had to use a lot of material to get it up to the minimum fill line. I think I ended up making about three cups of infused honey (which lasted well over a year).
(I used to use the MBM but now I prefer the Ardent FX because it decarbs and infuses all in one machine).
While I love the MB machine for most things, it doesn’t handle small batches well. The next best thing, in terms of convenience, is the mason jar method.
Does Making CannaHoney in a Jar Smell?
This mason jar method for infusing honey with marijuana is simple and…wait for it…it doesn’t smell! While decarboxylating can be a tricky smell to navigate, making Cannabis honey and oil using the crock pot mason jar method is virtually smell-proof.
Cannabis Infused Lavender Honey
You can easily infuse your Cannabis honey with any herb you’d like, including lavender. Just put a small amount in your Cannabis satchel. The first time I made Cannabis infused honey, I added a few teaspoons of dried lavender and it was delightful.
I went herb-free on this batch because I’m using it for a special tonic that I can’t wait to share with you (!!!!!) and I wanted to try a few different things. But I highly recommend trying herbs to enhance the flavor of your marijuana infused honey.
Marijuana Infused Honey Recipe
Method:
1. In a piece of cheesecloth about 10″ x 10″, wrap:
15 grams decarboxylated Cannabis
2. In a quart jar, combine:
2 cups local honey
1-2 tablespoons non-GMO sunflower lecithin
Your Cannabis satchel
3. Place lid on the quart jar and line a crockpot with a hand towel or dishrag.
4. Fill crockpot with water and turn on low. Place honey jar in crockpot.
5. Once the honey is warm, periodically shake the jar and check the lid to make sure the pressure isn’t building. If it is, burp the jar and tighten the lid again.
6. After 8 hours (or up to a few days if you’re the forgetful type), use a pair of tongs to remove the Cannabis satchel from the honey and squeeze as much out as you can using the tongs. Odds are, there will still be some honey up in there. You have two options: make some extra-strength high chai, or squeeze it out with your hands and make some honey-finger-sweetened chamomile tea. Player’s choice.
7. Store in the fridge or in a cool dark place.
Okay! Now that your life will be forever sticky, I’m sure you have questions, comments, thoughts, and feelings. Lay them on me!
Much love,
Corinne

What about making the honey with the magic butter machine…how much bubble hash would you use? How much oil? Assuming two cups of honey still….thanks.
Corinne I use a Potato ricer to squeeze out Cannabis oil or honey it gets 95% out & I hand squeeze the rest. Plant residue can be added to smoothies. I decarboxilate on baking paper inside sealed paper bag inside Alfoil sealed envelope in the oven it’s Totally smell free.
Thanks for the pointers…this is real, practical information…so very helpful! 🙂
I use a French press! It’s quick and the least messy. Use it for butter and any liquid you infuse.
This comment or question is about the canna honey, I’ve made it a few times but this last time was the first time I had added the sunflower lecithin to my recipe and my honey came out very dark almost a sorghum color can anyone tell me why and is this normal?
Mine has come out that way with and without the lecithin. After about 10 hours in the crockpot it turns darker and after two days is almost like molasses. Maybe my heat is up too high? Though it’s on lowest setting.
I have a question about the canna honey, I’ve made it a few times and I use the crockpot method, this was the first time I used the sunflower lecithin and my honey came out very dark like dark molasses or sorghum, can anyone explain why?
I’m curious about what the sunflower lecithin’s role in the mothod is. I’m assuming that it’s in there as a fat? Will it work with out that? I have only heard of one other method that uses an alcohol extraction. Do you have an opinion about which one is better?
lecithin is an emulsifier which helps the body to absorb more of the THC from your finished product. Lecithin is made from soy or sunflowers, and there may be other types as well. This recipe calls for sunflower, which is in my opinion the better option because of the amount of soy that is genetically modified. However, if your not one to avoid GMO’s, soy lecithin will work just as well, and can be found at your local GNC/vitamin store. Soy lecithin is an ingredient in many/most packaged products (check your pantry.) Although the method will work fine without lecithin, it will make your finished product much more effective. Also try adding it to your other favorite edible products, I think you’ll see it improves them as well.
do you use sunflower lecithin powder or oil?

Hi, I am new to cannabis and have a shop on Main street I literally go to Mark & Candy’s for my oil. It comes in a syringe and I squeeze out about a rice grain amount into an empty capsule I got at the drug store from the pharmacist. Now I can eat and pee for I take 2 capsules a day. Then they were selling edibles, including honey infused with cannabis, a quarter teaspoon is all needed with my tea in the morning and I swear by the honey so much I bought a pail of it from a local bee farmer. I went to Mark & Candy’s store and asked how much oil do I need for the pail of honey – and they said about 2 syringes.
I cannot find a recipe to make it, I just put the oil in the honey and stirred. Is that enough? Should I not heat it in a crockpot or something as you guys suggest? I have my little jars ready to package the cannabis-infused honey, but I don’t’ know if I made it right! Can someone help me understand?
Heating honey @ or beyond 98.6f can destroy many nutritional elements of the honey –> http://thebeejournal.blogspot.com/2011/12/heating-and-freezing-honey.html

Hey Corinne, why do you use non-gmo liqiud Lecithin in honey recipe? It doesn’t mix with honey. Can you please explain how to extract both?
Can i use liquid lecithin our does it have to be powder?
I used the powder sunflower lecithin. Was just wondering why this is used? Is it an oil for the THC to adhere too??
Could you use coconut oil?
Thanks
The lecithin is used to increase potency. She wrote about the magical properties of lecithin here: https://wakeandbake.co/lecithin-cannabis-oil/
I have ready made medical tincture, do you think I could make honey with that instead?
Absolutely! That’s the easiest (and least sticky) way to infuse honey. Maybe I should mention that in the post 😉 Thanks so much for reaching out.
Much love, C
What would you suggest? Would I heat the honey up then turn off the heat and then add the tincture with the heat off?
Hi Sarah!
That would work perfectly 🙂 Let me know how it goes!

I wish it was just legal in my state and I could buy it instead of wasting weed failing at trying. #frustrated
Haha, I’m sure you have friends in your state. A little pot won’t kill anyone 🙂
I am getting confused a bit. Although i love this recipe, i taught i needed to use a fat base like coconut oil or another, since i read that thc is fat soluble. I taught i HAD TO use some fat for the thc to be extracted from my bud or abv.
sunflower lecithin is an emulsifier. Making the thc an oil and honey mix with out separating
the carboxyl group from the thca is dropped. it’s psychoactive at this point.
sunflower lecithin is an emulsifier. Making the thc an oil and honey mix with out separating.
So if I do this without decarboxylating the cannabis first will it still have “effects”? I wanted to do one batch mild and one batch strong. How do you suggest i do this? I was thinking of using some leafy trimmings for the mild batch and not decarbing them, then using some good buds for the strong batch!?
Would raw honey be better? Or does it really matter because your slow cooking it?
It would be a complete waste of raw honey IMO. Raw honey has never been heated, which means it still has all of it’s medicinal properties intact. As soon as you heat it, you lose those properties.
Raw honey is best suited to brews like homemade herbal cough syrups, added after the herbal mixture has cooled to room temperature. I make mine with the best quality, local, raw honey that I can find.
Hi Corrine,
How would you do this with bubble hash? I’m a MMJ card holder and grew my first crop this summer. I was paranoid about mold when I stored my harvest so ended up shaking it out into hash. But now I have a hard time with recipes because most call for bud or trim and I don’t know the conversion amount of hash. I have made butter and oil to cook with but love the idea of honey now that the cold weather is here. First how much hash does 15 grams of Cannabis trim/bud translate or convert to? Second, I wouldn’t need to do the chees cloth sash so I am assuming just mix it in and let it dissolve as the honey heats. Does that sound about right? Thanks for the help and I love reading your articles.

Thanks AndrewK – much appreciated!
It’s surprising the honey doesn’t have a smell! All of your highdeas made me laugh. Thanks for sharing this recipe!
I wasn’t even sure this was possible. I can’t imagine having cannabis infused honey but your video makes it seem pretty simple.
I just made cannabis infused coconut oil (great recipe btw and TY!). I m planning to mix it with honey, can you give me idea of how many tablespoon of oil and how many cup of honey? Should I warm the honey and mix it with oil until it is incorporated then let it cool?
I make this often, cooled oil and honey-50/50 ratio. I use an emulsion blender and it doesn’t separate at room temperature. Use on toast, or in a cup of hot peppermint tea. I recommend starting with 1/2 tsp-1 tsp. until you find your individual appropriate dosage.
how many servings would this make?
I Can’t Wait to try this one. I am rather new to all of this so I love that this site offers such clear and concise information.

This is a great recipe thanks for spending the time to make it. This is the first time I plan on doing anything like this and I am have a couple of questions.
I have about 10-15g of steams that I plan on using for this recipe, how much honey do you think I should use?
I also purchased some liquid lecithin will that work or do I need the powered version.
Thanks again for sharing
I’d use enough to cover the stems completely, so breaking them up would yield a more potent product. Let me know how it goes!
Much love,
Corinne
Thanks for the reply. Ill make sure to update you on how it goes. I am still unsure of whether I should use liquid or powder lecithin for this recipe.
Thanks again

Instead of using my hands I bought a small handheld citrus squeezer with handles.
It works great.
Let me clarify from my post above…
I put the finished product that has been in the crock pot( still in the cheese cloth) into the citrus juice squeezer to squeeze out all the goods from the cheesecloth.
Saves product:?
Yes! I love this tip. I’ve been using my potato ricer to do the same thing when I make larger batches. I’ll add this into the post asap. Thanks for reaching out <3
I just learned about the wonderful world of tinctures and yesterday, I went on a tincture making marathon (tried the vegetable glycerin, Everclear and honey recipes… with both sativa and indica)! I ended up with a little too much of the Everclear based tincture to fit in my brown glass dropper bottles, so I dumped it into the honey tincture I have simmering in a crock pot… now I’m worried that I may have ruined the honey? Do you know if it’s okay to mix the two?
is there any other alternatives to using a crock pot?
Did you use a quart size jar or pint? A quart jar seems rather large for a two cup recipe.
I used a quart. I think a pint might be a bit too small after adding cannabis material and lecithin, but let me know if you try it 🙂
Much love,
Corinne

If using RS oil and raw honey, is the lecithin still required as an emulsifier?
Yes. An emulsifier is always needed when making edibles that don’t have fats
If you use the MB do you need to slow cook it for 8 hours?
If you are using the MB, do you still wrap the flower in cheesecloth? I just made a batch using my MB, but I had the hardest time straining all of the ground flower out of the honey. I used 32 oz honey, 2 oz of decarb’d flower and 4 tsp Sunflower Lecithin, but only got about 16 oz of useable honey 🙁 I’ve used your other version, with the crockpot and the little pouches of goodness, and it is AMAZING. I’m thinking (wondering) if the MB can’t handle the thicker honey as well…
I was wondering about that myself. I did a glycerine tincture in the mb machine and could only squeeze out half of what I put in. I am wanting to do a honey in it next but am concerned about loosing so much while straining. Sounds like some are using a ricer or citrus squeezer to strain. Any one else have idea on this? I love putting the honey in my nite time tea for pain relief and good sleep!
Actually if the herb is loose with honey in the MB machine what is the best straining method? I did a glycerine tincture and lost a lot of material using the strainer bag that came with it.
I recently purchased an 8 piece, 1 gallon, 220 -25 micron bubble hash filter bag set for $20+ online. I use them with my 3 year old MB machine. I make EverClear infusion(Green Dragon), Reduce it to RSO for loading gel caps, also Glycerin infused vape juice/ drink sweetener, also coconut infusion which I use for anti-pain salve, cooking, sunblock etc. I’ve used Cheese cloth, paper towels and coffee filters of all types and a system, usually three filter bags, does almost all the GREEN removal. Glycerin I still use cheesecloth, paper towels, ove-glove and a cold/raw potato squeezer/masher. I need a 64 ounce, stainless steel measuring pitcher with a 6″ opening. One MB everclear/RSO run produces 2 months, 60+doses of RSO capsules for me. When I make coconut infusion I pour it into muffin tins, 4 tablespoon size, for freezer storage in freezer bags. Lasts months. All clean ups I use 3 part Dawn/vegetable oil/water for solution.
While Decarboxylated cannibis for first time to make syrup stupidly put oven on 220 centigrade and when realised after 20 minutes had already burnt the cannibis. Would it still be of any use?
That doesn’t sound promising.. How did it turn out?
Happy 420! I just wanted to say I love this blog soooo much and I am not really the blog reading type! I love how in depth you go and the work you put in to it and the health based recipes of course 🙂 and you’re beautiful! I’m jealous that you don’t get any eye puffiness from cannabis! Do you have any tips or opinions on that? Anyway happy 420 and thanks for your knowledge! 🙂

Hi there Corinne, thanks so much for providing this recipe. I am new to making cannabis infused goodies in the kitchen. I was wondering, how long are we leaving the jar on the heat in the crockpot? 8 hours on low? Also, about how much water should I put in the crockpot? Thank you so much!!! 🙂

Corinne,
Have you ever tried making an infusion under pressure? I am so tempted to try making infused honey in my electric pressure cooker, but am nervous about killing the THC etc. thanks!
I have made both tincture and coconut oil using my pressure cooker. I also de carved the plant in the cooker as well. I have been extremely pleased with the results, now just trying to figure out dosing….
I drink lots of honey so I’ve been talking about cannabis honey forever….so when i stumbled upin your blog tonight it was destined to be lol. I have questions now. How much cannibis do you put into the cheese cloth? How much water do you put into the crockpot before putting the jar in? Do you leave the lid off the jar while its cooking/infusing? I must read more of your blogs.
Hey looks great, medicinal properties of honey and cannabis!
I do it this way for a clean and fully saturated Honey; Make a consumable ethanol tincture by boiling to a reduction of 1/2 the starting volume. ( For reference I use 4 grams into 90 ml simmer/reduce and strain) Once the Tincture is made you can add that to the honey mixing well then the cover container with a coffee filter allowing the ethanol to off gas from the honey. only the cannabinoids are left behind.
Regards Ryan
Hello! I just completed a honey infusion, and I’m quite amazed at the potency! Here’s the interesting part: I used FRESH cannabis buds. I have an old yogurt maker, so did a water bath on the lowest setting for 3 days (unplugging at night). Your recipe called for 15 g of decarboxylated plant material, so I doubled that for fresh, using almost 40 g of fresh bud from a supposedly high CBD plant given to me by a friend. I tasted the equivalent of 1 tsp while I was bottling it, and I got WAY TOO stoned about 2 hours later.
I am an herbalist, and all of my infusions and tinctures have been made with fresh plant material, and all of my Cannabis products seem to have activated THC content. I use the tinctures in sleep and pain formulas, the oils are used externally and internally, and I give small amounts of the oil to both of my dogs on a daily basis. My oil infusions are infused in the sun, usually for 4-6 weeks.
In any event, I have never heard anyone recommend using fresh plant material, but as an herbalist I felt that doing so would capture more of the medicinal properties of the plant. I’ve had very good results.
Thanks for everything, Corinne! Love your blog.
Thanks for the response Sarah, we actually have a blog post coming up soon about using fresh trim and buds from your fall harvest, so I’ll see what I can dig up for any information regarding cannabinoid content in fresh cannabis vs. dried & cured. Great point! Thank you!
I followed the recipe exactly and made sure to use decarboxylated cannabis and I get absolutely no effects from this honey. I’ve been slowly trying larger doses, up to 2 tablespoons now and still nothing. My tolerance is very low, I don’t smoke, and I only use edibles in small amounts once or twice a week. I don’t know what happened with this but I made 4 jars of it that I don’t know what to do with now. I think I’ll stick with butter and oils from now on.
I also followed the recipe and did a proper decarb. I did not use the MB. I started with 1/2 tsp as I have a higher than normal tolerance. I am up to 1 full tsp and no effect at all. Maybe I need to try 2 Tbs or more?
I am not convinced that honey infuses very well with the decarbed herb for 1. Didn’t find much on the Internet to back this up…
#2, a low temperature might not help the infusion. However, if you increase the temp beyond 50 degrees C you start ruining the honey.
#3 the recommended dosage seems way off for this recipe in my opinion if it even works at all.. I am considering infusing first into a small amount coconut oil and then mixing that with the honey.. Any suggestions?
a follow up from High Times – EV: Honey can’t bind to cannabis, and honey can’t be made into cannabis-infused honey from the bees themselves. The best way I have found is to make a tincture and to add it to the honey. Some people infuse their honey with the herbs. I feel that works with almost everything, except cannabis. Without any fat, it doesn’t have anything to bind to. Adding infused coconut oil with the tincture has been working amazing for me.
So this recipe will not work unless bind the cannabis to a fat first. Thus you need to infuse into something else first. I will try coconut oil..
Here is a link to the article – https://hightimes.com/edibles/benefits-cannabis-infused-honey/
Not sure if tincture is correct here folks.. as a tincture is usually made using alcohol.c I am wondering if you have omitted the emulsifier somehow during the process? An emulsifier assists in attracting the THC to the Honey, its usually fat based( think oil/ butter). Then you add this to the honey.. the emulsifier is the key here.
Hope this clears some things up..
SP
have you tried?
I decarboxylate, put a 1/4 in cheese cloth and put in pint jar. I pour about 10oz honey over the top because you lose about an ounce or more in the herb and cheesecloth. Plus I use some fine high power flower as opposed to trim or stems. I fill the crock pot up so the level of water on outside is exactly same as level of product in the jar. I do the crockpot on HIGH heat. 12-24 hours. Do I care about “ruining” the honey? Well no, I’m doing this for the benefits of the Canabis, not the honey. I put it in my tea at night. If I need the benefits of raw local honey, then I just do raw organic honey. What I get from it is dark and delicious canabis infused honey. I get the best sleep of my life. Is it still sweet? Yes. Is it still delicious? Yes. Just putting it out there because I think it’s really harder to get the best of both worlds when in this case I just need the best of one. BTW when you are ready to pull the cheese cloth out, just try to squeeze out a little bit and throw the cheese cloth in a pot with about a quart of water and steep in there for some awesome sweet tea to enjoy hot or put in the fridge for another day. Hope this helps and Thx Corrine for the tips because I first started doing this off of your recipe and made my own methods of it over much practice.
Did you remember to add the emulsifier? Without emulsification the honey will probably be just that..honey.
Hello all, I just made a batch of honey and have a couple of questions. So, I started with the Decarb. @ 240 for 1 hour then added Decarbed. flower to cheesecloth and placed in the honey jar. I added mason jar to crock pot on low for 6-8 hours then turned the crock pot to high for about 3 hours and my crock pot never went above 135. My question is, did my honey get hot enough for the infusion and is my honey safe?
My honey isn’t as potent as I had anticipated and I’m trying to sort out why. I cut down the recipe to 1/5 so I am only using 3 grams of cannabis so I can make micro batches. I decarbed the cannabis with the Lift and followed this recipe, leaving the jar of honey/cannabis satchel stewing in the crockpot on Low for 10-15 hours. When it’s done the honey is very dark– almost as dark as molasses — and the potency of the honey is very low. I need a full tablespoon to feel a buzz off it.
Anyone have troubleshooting tips?
So, I am new to this, and I put kief straight into the honey. It was in a croc pot on warm for 2 days… the hokney is now darker and I strained out the honey… but it doesn’t seem to have the effect it should. I was told that I didn’t need to decarb first, because the heatofthe croc pot would do it during the process…. where did I go wrong?? Do I need to decarb first? Add more plant?
While the heat of crockpot will likely decarb “some” of your material… we always recommend decarbing first, even with kief.
What temp setting do you use for infusing honey with the Levo?
We recommend you contact Levo’s customer support or their website for product specifics. Thank you!
I tried this recipe, left it on the warm setting on my crockpot but for about 1.5 days. It came out dark which is fine, but it also has bits in it. Like caramelized bit or maybe its the lecithin? Is this normal?
with this or any other infusion recipe, be it coconut oil, a glycerin tincture or this honey, can you perform the slow cooker step directly in the slow cooker?
I bought second hand those small slow cookers used for keeping sauces warm. I was hoping to use that to infuse cannabis into tinctures and oils directly in the device. Would you say this is acceptable or am I better off using your jar method in my full size slow cooker?
Nuff love & thanks for this share??
Hey everyone! Quick question, recently got a dablicator, from the good people @CBCB and I wanted to infuse some honey with it. But I don’t know how much I should put in the honey. Says on the packaging it’s THC: 393.02mg….thanks for the help! Have a great day!
Hi. Am wanting to make my own infused honey with CBD and THC and was wondering can I use Mary’s 1500mg THC oil and the same for th CBD. Could someone please tell me how I would do it. I have severe COPD with emphysema, CHF, chronic pain, chronic fatigue and can’t get by without my honey but it is way too expensive. Any suggestions would be gratefully and humbly accepted. Namaste ???
Hi. Would it be better to use liquid or powder sunflower lecithin? Is there much of a difference?
I melt my canna coconut oil & put it in jar with honey in crockpot w/ water. Stir & warm for however many hours, & it comes out yummy, no mess or waste using cheesecloth!! Also read recipes about blending in blender, but see no need for that either.
I make my canna coconut oil w/ lecithin & cook that in the honey, in the jar in crockpot, no cheesecloth
Wondering 2 things about infused honey (which I LOVE), have you made it in the Ardent FX and if so, how did you do it? What is the difference in infusing honey with decarbed flower vs. infused oil vs. concentrate (RSO)? Does using the flower directly increase the amount of THC, CBD, other cannabanoids?
Hi Janet,
We haven’t made infused honey in the FX yet (great idea!)
Using flower does not increase the amount of THC, CBD, or other cannabinoids, it is more about personal preference and what you have on hand to use.
I hope this helps!
