If you’ve ever thought about making your own infused oils at home, you’ve probably heard that coconut oil is one of the best carriers. What you might not know is that avocado oil works just as well (maybe even better for some people).
Both oils are nutrient-rich, versatile, and simple to work with. And the best part? You don’t need complicated equipment or fancy techniques to start making your own.
The coconut oil recipe has been at the heart of Wake + Bake since the very beginning. Back before there was a blog, a cookbook, or a business, the journey started with a jar of coconut oil on the counter, a handful of flower, and a little curiosity. That first infusion changed everything.

Later, avocado oil joined the mix, offering a smooth texture and a boost of healthy fats. Each has its strengths, and once you try them both, you’ll see why they’ve remained staples over the years.
In this post, we’ll talk about why coconut and avocado oils are perfect for infusions, walk through recipes, and share tips for using your oil in everyday life.
Why Coconut and Avocado Oils Work So Well
Coconut oil has been a longtime favorite in infused recipes because it’s rich in saturated fat, which makes it an excellent carrier for plant compounds. It also has a familiar taste that works well in baked goods, drinks, and even on toast. Plus, it doubles as a nourishing base for skincare.
Avocado oil, on the other hand, is often overlooked but deserves just as much love. It’s high in monounsaturated fats, packed with vitamins A, D, E, and K, and has a neutral flavor that makes it incredibly versatile. It also has a higher smoke point than coconut oil, which means it can handle more heat in cooking.

First Things First: Decarboxylation

Before infusing, your flower needs to be activated through decarboxylation. This step ensures that your oil is effective and consistent. While you can decarb in an oven, I swear by the Ardent FX. No guessing, no stink, no scorching. I just pop in my flower and oil, press a button, and come back to perfectly potent infused oil every time.
Infused Coconut Oil Recipe
Cannabis has walked with me through so many seasons, and this recipe has always been there too. Even after a decade of experimenting, writing, and sharing, I still make this infusion regularly. It’s simple, it works, and it’s the one I come back to over and over again.
Ingredients
- 1 cup organic coconut oil (Refined coconut oil is a great option if you prefer less flavor or want to save a few bucks.)
- 7 grams decarboxylated cannabis or hemp flower
- 1 tablespoon sunflower lecithin (For full potency and emulsification. If you’re sensitive to the taste, you can use 1 teaspoon.)
Method
1. Use the mason jar method or a decarboxylator to activate your flower.
2. Add the coconut oil, sunflower lecithin, and decarbed flower to a heat-safe mason jar. Place in a crockpot set to warm or low. Insert a thermometer and maintain a steady temp between 160–180°F for 2 hours.

3. Line a fine mesh strainer with several layers of cheesecloth. Carefully pour the infused oil through and let it drain for 10 minutes. Once it’s cool enough to touch, squeeze out every last drop from the plant material.
4. Transfer to a clean glass jar. Store in a cool, dark place until ready to use.
Use it anywhere you’d normally reach for infused MCT or olive oil. It’s deeply nourishing, versatile, and helps your body make the most of every milligram.

- Oven thermometer optional
- Mason jar or infuser
- Baking sheet or shallow dish
- Cheesecloth or fine mesh strainer
- Dark glass bottle or jar
Ingredients
- 1 cup coconut oil
- 7 to 14 grams decarboxylated cannabis or hemp flower
- 1 tbsp sunflower lecithin optional, but helps with potency and consistency
Instructions
- Use the mason jar method or a decarboxylator to activate your flower.
- Add the coconut oil, sunflower lecithin, and decarbed flower to a heat-safe mason jar. Place in a crockpot set to warm or low. Insert a thermometer and maintain a steady temp between 160–180°F for 2 hours.

Infused Avocado Oil Recipe

While coconut oil is a household favorite, avocado oil deserves its own spotlight. It’s heat-stable, has a mild flavor, and a smooth texture that makes it ideal for both topicals and edibles. This oil makes an excellent base for capsules, edibles, and soothing salves.
Ingredients
- 1 cup avocado oil
- 7 grams decarboxylated cannabis or hemp flower
Method
1. Preheat your oven to 180°F and activate your flower before infusing.
2. In a heat-safe mason jar or infuser, combine avocado oil with the decarbed flower. Keep the temperature steady and let it infuse for 2 hours.
3. Line a fine mesh strainer with cheesecloth and carefully pour the infused oil through. Allow it to drain for about 10 minutes, then squeeze out the remaining oil from the plant material once it’s cool enough to handle.
4. Label with the strain and date, then transfer to a clean dark glass container. Store in a cool, dark place until ready to use.
Use it anywhere you’d normally reach for infused MCT or olive oil. It’s deeply nourishing, versatile, and helps your body make the most of every milligram.

Equipment

Coconut vs. Avocado: Which One Should You Choose?
The beauty of these recipes is that they don’t compete—they complement each other. Coconut oil is perfect if you love baking, desserts, or making skin care products. Its natural richness adds flavor and texture to sweet recipes, and its moisturizing qualities make it ideal for topicals.
Avocado oil, on the other hand, is the choice if you prefer savory cooking, higher heat methods, and skincare. It disappears into dressings, sauces, and sautéed dishes, while delivering a nutrient-packed punch.
Why not make both? Having each one on hand gives you options, and both will quickly become staples in your kitchen and wellness routine.
