Let’s face it, life can get stressful.

That’s why it’s so important to carve out as much time as possible for self-care and quiet time. If you’re looking for a natural way to loosen up, physically and mentally, we have three great options for you:

  1. Cannabis
  2. Meditation
  3. Yoga

On their own, cannabis, meditation, and yoga can do wonders to help alleviate life’s little downsides such as:

  • Depressive Thoughts
  • Aches and Pains
  • Digestive Issues
  • Anxiety
  • Weight Gain
  • Bout of Stress

It’s no wonder that combining the three makes it easier to go deeper and really get to the good stuff: transformation, release, breakthrough and inner stillness.

Cannabis, meditation, and yoga not only compliment one another, but they also strengthen each other’s benefits.

Cannabis has been proven to have at least 113 rare chemical compounds. These are called cannabinoids. Cannabinoids interact with a part of your system that regulates your mood, pain sensations, and focus.

And most avid cannabis users who also do yoga will share how the enhanced awareness and relaxation caused by cannabis can help elevate your practice and motivate you to get on the mat.

So, whether you’ve practiced meditation and yoga for years, or are new to these practices, you can benefit from combining those practices with cannabis.

Today, we’re going to explore the 5 best cannabis strains for meditation and yoga, so you can find something that fits your practice every day.

Cannabis and Its Effect on the Mind

cannabis and the mind

Before diving into the best cannabis strains for meditation and yoga, lets go over the three types of cannabis and how they interact with the body.

There are three varieties of cannabis you will see in most shops. They are:

  • Indica – Gives a Mellow Feeling, Great for Stress/Racing Thoughts
  • Sativa – Gives an Uplifting Feeling, Great for Focus/Intense Workouts
  • Hybrids – A Combo of Indica and Sativa

As we discuss the best cannabis strains for meditation and yoga, we may reference these words. So, keep an eye out, it’ll be on the test later.

Just kidding! The only tests in yoga are internal 😉

Now that you put your No. 2 pencils aways, let’s take a look at the best cannabis strains for meditation and yoga.

Best Strain for Meditation – Hindu Kush

yoga and cannabis

Do the dishes! Get an oil change! Pick up the birthday cake!

ENOUGH!

One of the hardest parts about learning to meditate is shutting up that voice in your head. Don’t get defeated, just learn to train the blabbermouth inside.

Seeing as you are human and all, you can’t really shut your brain off. That would be a tragedy! Instead, you need to turn down the chatter going on inside of it.

Remember those pop quiz words we mentioned above? Hindu Kush is what they would call an indica. It gives you an intense body rush that will have you feeling like a ball of Jello.

When you burn Hindu Kush, you will notice immediately that is has a familiar scent of incense. Incense is also synonymous with the art of meditation. This scent will further enhance the experience, getting you ready to clear the mind!

Lastly, the piny flavor of Hindu Kush actually brings a sedative-like feeling to the body. That’s because the rare compounds present in cannabis help ease stress signals throughout the body. They do this by prompting your body to create relaxant hormones, such as dopamine.

By creating hormones that turn off stress signals, it shuts the chatter out of your mind. You’ll stop thinking about dishes and start thinking about wellness. Now, if only those dishes would just do themselves!

Best Strain for Yoga Asana – Lamb’s Bread

cannabis and yoga

This is one of the best cannabis strains for those who are new to the mat and for well-versed yogis. While the Hindu Kush was 100% indica (a relaxant strain), the Lamb’s Bread is a hybrid. This means it has both the relaxant properties of an indica, merged with the stimulant properties of a sativa.

What makes Lamb’s Bread one of the best strains for yoga is how the farmers created the plant. While it contains traits of both sativa and indica, the effects lean toward the former. Instead of the overwhelmingly relaxing feelings you’d get with a Hindu Kush, you’re going to want to be a bit more active with a Lamb’s Bread.

This strain originated in Jamaica and became a favorite of Bob Marley’s. The artist credits this flower for helping him tap into his creativity. These kinds of benefits can translate to the yoga mat as well.

Whenever we start something new, our walls tend to be up. Yoga is no different. We feel silly trying to bend into weird poses and hanging upside down.

By opting for Lamb’s Bread, this strain helps break down those walls. Upon inhalation, you can expect immediate sensations of euphoria. Embrace this feeling and hit the yoga mat with an open mind.

As you become more experienced with yoga, you will learn to love the Lamb’s Bread. Yoga is about marrying your movements to your breath. By choosing Lamb’s Bread, experienced yogis may stumble into little nuances in their movements that will strengthen their practice.

Best Strain for Yoga + Meditation – Grandaddy Purple

best cannabis strain for meditation and yoga

We’ve covered the best strain for meditation. Then, we went over the best cannabis strain for yoga. Now, how about for both? Seeing as cannabis, meditation and yoga are all about balance, let’s introduce you to Grandaddy Purple. No, he won’t give you a ton of money on your birthday, but Grandaddy Purple can give you strength and peace of mind.

What is unique about Grandaddy Purple is how it affects the body. Remember how we keep mentioning that indica can make you feel a bit relaxed? Grandaddy Purple is mostly an indica strain.

With that being said, it also has an energizing effect on the body! This best of both worlds makes this the best strain for both worlds of meditation and yoga.

Whenever we are doing yoga or meditation, we are trying to listen to what our body is telling us. In meditation, your goal is to clear your mind and perhaps a solution to everyday worries will arise in your thoughts. For those practicing yoga, we’re trying to stretch out the kinks (and don’t we all have too many), while attempting to grow stronger.

With its relaxant-like effects, Grandaddy Purple can help shut off the brain’s white noise. However, the energizing side effect of Grandaddy Purple will also keep your mind alert to your surroundings. After all, a primary goal in meditation is to enhance all of your senses!

Meanwhile, Grandaddy Purple is also a very useful tool for yogis. As we go through poses, we tend to crash down on joints or bend far beyond our body’s limits. When you use Grandaddy Purple, it helps you pay more attention to your movements.

Thanks to Grandaddy Purple, you will become more aware of over-exerting yourself. As a result, you are less prone to injury and more prone to gaining strength!

Lastly, this is an ideal cannabis strain for those who are doing a lot of yoga grounding work, like a yin or restorative practice. As the name suggests, these are moves that you do mostly on your backside.

Seeing as Grandaddy Purple is primarily an relaxant, you don’t want to be bouncing up and down like a grasshopper riding a pogo stick on a trampoline. That would be like running a marathon on an Ambien!

Best Strain for Restorative Yoga – Lavender

yoga and cannabis

Speaking of your backside, you might want to stay there with some Lavender. This cannabis strain also leans on the indica side of the spectrum. Unlike Grandaddy Purple, this flower doesn’t have the energizing properties.

Lavender is an ideal strain for inner peace. As the name suggests, lavender will help ease your racing thoughts. This will allow you to focus on the task at hand, which is clearing your mind.

For those who want to use Lavender for yoga, it’s best to keep the routine light. With that being said, this is a strain that will help you get to know your body a bit better.

Many medical cannabis patients get the Lavender strain to combat conditions such as ADD/ADHD. The rare compounds in Lavender help bring focus to the mat. For beginners, using Lavender will help you concentrate on the poses while keeping an ear out for your instructor.

As for the experienced yogi crowd, Lavender is the best cannabis strain for meditation and yoga when there are deep stretches involved. That way you can almost zonk off as you ease into more complex poses.

Lastly, increase the benefits of this strain by diffusing lavender essential oil. This will undoubtedly strengthen the sedative-like effects of Lavender cannabis. Not to mention, it smells like a dream!

Best Strain for Flow, Power or Vinyasa – ACDC

yoga and cannabis

Want to get a bit of a sweat-on this yoga sesh? Crank up some ACDC. You’ll be back in black and sopped in back sweat in no time.

From novices to vets of the mat, ACDC is one of the best cannabis strains for meditation and yoga. This particular strain is high in a compound known as CBD.

You may have heard about CBD on the news lately. This is the rare plant molecule that opened the door for medical cannabis to become legalized. Thanks to CBD, medical cannabis can be administered in half the country to people suffering from:

  • Arthritis
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • PTSD
  • ADHD
  • Weight Issues
  • Inflammatory-Based Skin Conditions

The list goes on. However, we’re trying to keep it relevant to the best cannabis strains for meditation and yoga. Suffice to say, we think you get the point.

Due to its high levels of CBD, ACDC has a lot of antioxidant and anti-inflammatory capabilities. This is ideal for anyone who is looking to gain strength through yoga.

Being high in antioxidants, ACDC helps repair tissues while we damage it. Not to mention, the sedative-effects turn of the “You can’t do it” in your head. It’s like having a drill sergeant in boot camp without all the spit hitting your face as they yell.

From beginners to hardcore yogis, moving from pose to pose can be a lot on the body. As we work out, tissues naturally become sore. This causes us to want to give up the workout.

Giving up is counter-productive! That is why ACDC is the best gym partner in the world. It won’t let you give up!

  1. Hi Corrine,
I wrote on a couple of your other posts but I don’t think my messages posted. I am new to this MM journey and I really need some advice. Unfortunately, I don’t live in a forward thinking state so I am having to have a family member risk things to mail me products that will work.
In July I made a change to my life. I had been in pain management since 2004. When I quit pain medicine cold turkey in July I needed 8-10 percocet bad day for my pain. I have had 14 back surgeries. I also suffer from severe depression and anxiety as a result. To be honest I didn’t have any hope at all until….
My mom had a small jar or relief balm in her purse that my cousin had given her and I tried it. I cried real tears when a good deal of my pain dissapeared. At that point I contacted my cousin who sent me a vape pen, bath soak, edibles, relief balm and patches. They are all beneficial but the balm bath soak and patches are life changing yet cost prohibitive. I researched making my own balm and that led me to asking her to send RSO. I was able to make my own balm and it really works but I have not been able to find a mechanism/vehicle to make THC Transdermal.
I recently find your blog and recipes. I am hoping to create my own edibles using your guidelines. My question biggest questions are…can you yell me how to make your coconut oil infusion using RSO?? Do you have a receipe for bath salts? Each article I read from you gives mesa little more hope. I can’t tell you how much I would appreciate any advice you could give me.

    Thank you
    Toya

  2. Hi Corinne- do you have a preference for how you take in the cannabis pre-yoga/mediation? Edibles vs burning the cannabis in some way?

  3. Hello,
Do you have a recommendation for best strains for post surgical pain? I’m having a surgery in 2 weeks and would appreciate suggestions.
